Goodbye PYP and the Red building

Hard to believe that six years have passed since our little one (not so little anymore) started Kindergarten.  She has grown from a shy, quiet little girl to a friendly, confident pre-teen.  She has a good set of friends and is a keen and curious learner.  Grade 5'ers are the big kids in the Primary Years Programme (PYP) building and they got to be the leaders for the younger kids.  I am still in shock that Sophia is done with Grade 5.  We will miss the Red building (as the PYP building is called), all her teachers (Ms. M is awesome), after-school care, Ms. Janine, and being the "little ones" in the school.

The past year, with COVID protocols in place, has been unlike the previous years.  The kids have to wear masks and stay within their cohorts.  No mixing with the other grades.  Lots of hand washing and sanitizing.  No hugging teachers and friends.  Sophia's class also missed two sleep-away camps (one in Grade 4 and another in Grade 5) that would have made for some great memories with her classmates. On the positive side, nobody from her class got the virus.

Sophia moves to the Middle Years Programme (MYP) building, also known as the Blue building, in September. 

Sophia, I hope you continue to love learning, take action, show leadership, and pursue your interests with enthusiasm.  Keep learning how to be kind, how to have fun, how to not compromise who you are, willing to laugh at yourself when you make mistakes and spread your light to everyone around you. We love you!

We've been enjoying watching the Tokyo Olympics.  It's great to see these top-level athletes compete but it's also really sad to see the stands empty.  When is this pandemic going to end??? Olympic highlights:  Canadian women swim team doing so well (Penny, Maggie Mac Neil, Kayla Sanchez), watching archery for the first time (it's very exciting), Tom Daley knitting while watching the diving competition, the youngsters in skate boarding, Damian Warner in the decathlon, and Andre De Grasse winning medals.  And Toyota had ad during the Tokyo Olympics broadcast: You don't need to be amazing to start but you need to start to be amazing.

Grade 6

Wow!  Grade 6!  I can hardly believe Sophia is in middle school this year.  Her years in the primary program has just flown by.  She's been fortunate to have had wonderful teachers that she liked very much (Ms. Minichiello, Ms. Ottohal, Ms. Moriarty, Ms. Todd, Ms. Takeda) and who gave her such great support and encouragement each year.  Sophia started as a shy girl who was afraid to speak up but by Grade 5, she had come out of her shell, become more self-confident, and let her personality shine through. We've enjoyed watching her grow and support her as best we can.  My daily reminders to her are do your best, be kind, be you.  She makes us proud!
